I guess I should have kept my mouth shut at the last meeting when I asked if the new target stands that were being provided on the pistol range have kept people from shooting the barriers.
We may want to change the initiation process to include a reading comprehension test.
Anyone have any new suggestions on how to keep this from happening in the future?

I think it is time to start an orientation at the range for all new members. Require them to meet at the range with a knowledgable range officer to be briefed on targets, rules, target stands and maintenance of the range and range safety. After they demonstrate compentance they could be given a key to the range.
Vandalism must be reason to be expelled from the club.

Vandalism WILL get someone expelled. The problem is catching someone in the act.

Does anyone think that putting a flyer in with the range rules/member list this year when they are mailed to each member would help?
The flyer could be marked with "ATTENTION" all over it, and give a list of things that are not to be used as targets, with a reminder that if you are caught using blue/black barrels, barricades, ect. as target stands you will be expelled from the club permanently.
I know the rules are in the book, but how many of us have read the book each year, well besides the list of members. We are already going to be spending the money on postage, one extra piece of paper isn't going to cost any more. Heck I will print up the stuff if need be.
Just a suggestion.

I don't think that's a bad idea, we need to get Helen in the conversation though.

I think the idea of a range breifing/initiation is a great idea. At least that way there will be no excuses. Also they will know where everything is, do's and donts, 1st aid kits, arcs of fire, range protocols etc. Give them a thorough range breif then hand them their key that day.

Yup, I agree completely. Accept them at the monthly meeting, but don't give them a key until the end of a one hour orientation at the club.

We should bring this up at this months meeting to discuss. We could start it at the January meeting.

Of course we'll have to come up with what all we will cover. Any suggestions?
Proper target stands Cold range and Safe areas General firearm safety (180 degree rule) Location of first aid kit Check with RO if training is happening.
Maybe general overview of all the matches we hold, some people may not know what all we hold and may be interested in taking part.
What else would be good for an orrientation course?

We need to let them know where the target materials are located under the pavillion. Also about cleaning up after you are finished shooting, placing trash and paper targets in barrels and picking up brass. Steel targets and appropriate calibers for them, ie pistol calibers only on plates and such at the pistol bays. Make sure it is understood if you bring a guest you must remain with the guest, ie same pistol bay or rifle range, and that keys are not to be "loaned" to a friend to go shoot without the member. I also think TGC should consider placing a brass bucket at each bay, so those who don't reload can put the brass in the bucket instead of the trash can. Of course the buckets would have to be clearly labeled "BRASS ONLY".
That is all I can think of for now.
